What are some of the tougher toys for dogs?
I have a part Miniature Pincher part Dachshund that my wife and I rescued from a shelter about 7-8 months ago. She is a great dog that actually listens to us. She has no real behavior problems. The only real issue we have is that she tears up her toys REALLY EASILY. We have tried to get her some of the plastic toys that don’t break easy but she doesn’t like them. The only thing she really likes is the cloth toys ESPECIALLY the ones with a squeaker. We buy them in bulk at Wal-Mart as they are cheaper there because she destroys them so much. Today alone she went through two of them. Is there a stronger cloth type toy that I can get?
That’s funny that you ask this. Both of my pure breed doxies tear up everything too. So I’ll just tell you what we’ve gotten for them and what works.
My dogs are like the complete polar opposites when it comes to playing. One is kinda blah when it comes to playing, but he is a chewer (not of furniture) and my youngest dog is a player. Actually right now he’s squeaking a ball we had gotten for him and rolling it around all over the place.
We have a large assortment of toys. We also do like you and your wife do, buy the cheap cloth toys at walmart. We also bought replacement squeakers at petco/petsmart.
We also have several nylabones in several different styles for the both of them. We also have chew keys for them in the large and medium breed size. They usually sell them at petsmart or petco for less than 10 dollars. It’s basically a yellow ring with three keys, red, blue and yellow. My dog who is a chewer loves these nylabones and chew keys. He has gone through several sets of keys though it takes him months to chew at the ring enough for it to come apart. It goes without saying that you would need to watch them when chewing toys. He chews the ring first then once that’s destroyed, he goes at the keys. It’s okay if they swallow the tiny parts they chew off of the keys.
My dog who is more of a player loves his stuffed toys and sharing the bones and keys with his big brother, but the one toy he chooses over the zillion others we have are balls. If it’s round, squeaks, and fits in his mouth, it’s his and he’ll love it forever. However he chewed up the tennis balls we got him, cause they were cheap at petsmart and came in packs of like two or three. He actually chewed one of them up so much that he split in half. Anyway, my mom went to toys r us and got him this child sized basketball. It’s about the size of a large grapefruit, or a pineapple cut in half. It’s durable, it (annoyingly at times) squeaks, and he can squish it so he can carry it around with him. He is in love with it to the point that he cries sometimes without it. It’s been chewed at, clawed at, dug at, rolled down the stairs, stuffed under and in between the furniture, even outside and in the pool (we washed it off before he got it back) and it’s been holding up pretty well.
Also another thing for your dog that you could do (which other people may not be, but you do as you choose with your own dog) is to go to your local grocery store to the meat section. Ask if they have any marrow bones and if they do, if they could cut like four of them in the width of 1-2 inches each. If you do, take them home and boil the four of them in water for about 10-20 minutes. This kills all the germs and whatnot without fully cooking the meat. After they’ve had a day (or over night) to cool down, feel free to give your dog one and store the others in your freezer for like six months or so. All of my dogs have always loved this too, but just a heads up if you decide to try this, when they have the bone, they may become possessive over it.
I wouldn’t recommend rope toys cause they can tear the pieces of the rope out easily. Those firehose material toys are good too but my two have found ways to rip apart at the seams. Kong toys work great too but for most dogs to play with them, you need to put some type of food into them and this can start to effect their diet and weight over time.
